Top 9 Reasons You're Not Losing Fat

Top 9 Reasons You're Not Losing Fat

Obesity has been one of the fastest growing epidemics to hit America. It is responsible for the deaths of 300,000 people each year. The current generation of millennials is the first group in the history of the United States that is expected to live shorter lives than their parents.

There are several reasons the obesity problem exists, but the factors that contribute most to the problem are:
  • Our current abundance of processed foods
  • Lack of overall physical activity
Our current reliance on mobile phones, tablets, and computers has given our society the ability to do nearly everything without moving. Heck, even Taco Bell has an app that will deliver your double Crunchwrap Supreme Gordita Chaluparito directly to your doorstep, because heaven forbid you have to get in your car and drive half a mile to the nearest restaurant.

Drop Factor

Many people believe that weight gain is simply genetic? isn't it something you're born with? Doesn't your metabolism get worse with age? The answer is yes. Genetics MAY play a role in fat gain, but it plays a much smaller part than you may think.

However, there is no single gene that exists that makes someone 100 pounds overweight, regardless of their background and body makeup. Granted, there are medical conditions that may cause weight gain, but this number is so minute that it becomes irrelevant.

Regardless of background, socioeconomic status, career choice, and body type, there are always ways of improving our overall health. Now I am not coming from an aesthetics standpoint here, but rather strictly from a health perspective.

It has been proven time and time again that excess bodyweight places a much larger strain on the body. There is a reason why we do not see extremely heavy old people, because they generally do not live as long. I challenge you to find a 200 plus pound 90 year old, they just do not exist.

While I believe that the influences around us, such as fast food, do not help the situation, we must take responsibility for ourselves. We are the only people controlling what we eat and what enters our bodies.

Fast food and processed food can be safely consumed in moderation, however, our main problem exists in the fact that people rely solely upon it for their entire diet. This combined with lack of exercise has proven to yield deadly consequences.

We must make changes if we are to improve the health and well-being of our society as a whole. The following is a list of the top 10 reasons people give why they?re still fat and what can be done to change them.

9 Ways to Turn it Around and Lose Fat

I can't lose weight

First and foremost, I will say the single biggest reason why people are overweight is lack of willpower. Many people start a diet, lose a few pounds then become complacent.

In order to truly see results as Arnold would say "Put that cookie down!" People tend to give in when they don't see an immediate result, and instead decide to go back to old habits of eating junk food and processed food before becoming motivated for only a short time later.

This creates a never-ending focus on weight loss. Feeling desperate, people will try nearly every niche diet that comes out.

Have some will power, and stick to a plan even when it becomes difficult. The bottom line is...don't be a pussy!

I want to lose weight but I don't know how to

If you ask a majority of people what are their weight loss and fitness goals many would say I just wanna tone or I just want to lose a few pounds. This is the wrong mentality.

Have a goal, set a timeline, and stick with it. Constantly measure progress and make adjustments as necessary. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds in 12 weeks make sure you are losing around 1.6 pounds per week. If not, adjust your calories, increase your activity, or change your macronutrients.

Furthermore, writing this plan on paper will visually aide you in reaching your goals. This will go a long way towards helping you succeed.

I don't have time to prepare my meals

Meal PrepThe quickest way to get results is to make sure your diet is in check. This involves knowing exactly how many calories you are consuming.

Preparing your own meals and weighing food is far more effective than constantly eating out. Even if a restaurant states a food item has a certain nutritional value, you cannot trust that each restaurant or each chef is preparing the food the same way each time.

Plan your meals, know what calories and macronutrients you are attempting to hit and reach those goals every single day.

I don't have enough time to workout

Many people claim they do not have the time in their daily schedules to fit in workouts and meal preparation. The truth of the matter is that these people are likely watching hours of television each day, yet they can't devote 45 minutes to a workout.

If you care enough about reaching a goal you will do whatever it takes, even if it means sacrificing some of your free time. Make time now to reach your goals and it may not only improve your health but also extend your life.

If you can't make it to a gym start with some home workout programs based on bodyweight exercises or calisthenics.

I have a poor metabolism

This is probably the most widely misused weight loss excuse. There is a huge fallacy with regards to metabolism. While it is true that some people have a higher metabolism than others, a slow metabolism should not be used as an excuse.

Take two identical 150-pound males of the same age. Maybe one has a slightly higher metabolism and can consume 2,500 calories per day without gaining weight, and the other individual can only consume 2,000 calories. There are certain ways of speeding up and jump-starting your metabolism.

You may have to eat a bit less than someone else or perform a bit more cardio, TOUGH! Just go ahead and do it. Stop making excuses. No gene exists that makes you extremely overweight.

Your ancestors had the same genes you did and they likely weren't overweight.
Cardio
If you are just trying to get into shape, focus on performing cardio a few times per week along with a basic lifting program.

I'm too old to get into shape

This is another popular excuse. It is more or less just someone's way of saying I've always been like this and I don't want to change because change is hard. Wah wah!

Even if you have been overweight for a large portion of your life it's never too late to get into better shape. Make changes to your diet, up your activity level and you will be able to get into better shape than you ever thought possible.

I don't know how to get into shape

This is probably the laziest excuse of them all. First off, if you are just trying to get into shape, focus on performing cardio a few times per week along with a basic lifting program.

With today's technology you can find countless programs available for free to help you start your journey. As far as diet goes, BUY a food scale and measure your food. Stick to whole foods such as vegetables and lean protein sources and avoid processed foods.

Doing these simple things will go a long way towards building successful habits.

I eat healthy and don't lose weight

The term healthy food has become somewhat of a conundrum. If you think you are eating healthy, chances are you?re not.

People think they can eat as much of their Kashi Go Lean Cereal or fat-free potato chips as they want when trying to lose weight. IIt's believed this is "healthy." The truth of the matter is that people are neglecting the very basic principle of energy taken in versus energy expended out.

Furthermore, they are misinformed and brainwashed into believing certain food items are healthy when in fact they are not. Get informed and actually read a book or search the internet and find the answers.

I eat healthy during the week

There is a group of people that prepare their meals during the week and eat a moderately healthy diet. However, when it comes to weekends they will consume solely pizza and beer.

The weekend accounts for approximately 30% of your time. Therefore, if you aren?t sticking to your diet on the weekend you aren?t really sticking to your diet at all.

Stay focused and keep your meals and workouts in check even on weekends.

It's Time to Lose Fat and Regain Your Health

it's never too late to improve your health and get into shape. However, people become so ingrained in bad habits that they continually fall into the same patterns of eating junk food and not sticking to a plan.

I don't pity the weak. When I say weak, I mean weak-minded, not weak in terms of physical strength.

If someone is overweight they are the only ones that hold the power to make the changes necessary that will improve their health and prolong their lives. There are too many people that make excuses for why they aren't the best versions of themselves.

Focus not so much on a diet, but on sustainable, positive lifestyle choices; choices you can live with for the rest of your life. Stay motivated, stay mentally tough, and you will achieve results faster than you have ever imagined.
