Honey is awesome. It has a ton of benefits and of course an amazing taste, but most of the honey sold in stores has been heated and pasteurized.

Doing so can compromise some of the enzymes that give honey the benefits I am about to outline. So while store-bought honey is not bad for us, it is also not as awesome as the stuff you can find locally.

I was actually introduced to local honey by our carpenter, who told me about his son’s honey-farming business while he was finishing my now epic basement slash guest house. It all sounded a bit hippy-ish to me. As a product formulator my mind goes into defense-mode when sold a bill of goods on natural treatments for REAL ailments. But this one made sense to me.

As I delved into the research, I was excited at how much cool stuff can be garnered from this tasty treat – and with only 15 grams of carbs per tablespoon honey can fit into any diet. This is a GREAT amount to get the benefits I listed below.

Please read on and learn as I did that LOCAL honey can be a solid addition to your diet. It won’t change your life, but will make it marginally more AWESOME!

Top 5 Benefits of Local Honey

#1 – Local Honey for Allergies

I have bad allergies. BAD (emphasis on BAD). So does my daughter. When I was told of this benefit, I instantly thought of “The Princess Bride”. We all had to read this book and watch this in school, at least I did, but let me quote it out so you remember…

Man in Black: They were both poisoned. I spent the last few years building up an immunity to iocane powder.
Man in Black: I challenge you to a battle of wits.
Vizzini: I can’t compete with you physically, and you’re no match for my brains.

Basically, the main character took some “Iocane” poison for a few years. He increased the dose every time and built up an immunity to Iocane. Much like a vaccination like a flu shot makes your body build up an immunity to the virus, LOCAL honey is farmed from bees who harvest the pollen in local flowers and plants. Bear with me…

By having honey, you are receiving a daily dose and building up an immunity to the pollen in your area. So it has to be LOCAL; from what I’ve heard, within 100 miles or so. But the closer the better!

I have no data to back this up, but I have been outside a lot this year and have experienced to allergy-related issues at all. Hey, it’s worth a try.

According to the American College of Asthma, Allergies and Immunology, nasal allergies are estimated to affect approximately 50 million people in the United States. Allergy prevalence is increasing, affecting as many as 30 percent of adults and up to 40 percent of children. 16.9 million adults and 6.7 million children have been diagnosed with hay fever in the last year.

Did I mention it is also delicious?

Honey Bee

A tablespoon or two of honey to your pre-workout meal might be an epic way to obtain the aforementioned benefits as well as have a good source of energy to crush it in the gym.

#2 – Health Benefits of Local Honey and Antioxidants

Honey is also rich in antioxidants. Local honey contains more of these compounds than natural honey. This means more bang for your buck and more antioxidants per gram of carbohydrate!

#3 – Local Honey as a Cough and Sore Throat Suppressant

This one has data! A 2007 study at Penn State found that local honey was more effective that over the counter cough medicine!

#4 – Local Honey for Topical Wound Treatment

Honey has been shown to kill bacteria in wounds and speed healing. I know, this might be beyond the scope of this article, but still….common sense to me says that if it heals wounds and is edible, imagine what it can do in the body!

#5 – Local Honey as Workout Fuel

With a great makeup of slow and fast carbs, this is a great pre-workout addition. Typical honey analysis:

  • Fructose: 38.2%
  • Glucose: 31.3%
  • Maltose: 7.1%
  • Sucrose: 1.3%
  • Water: 17.2%
  • Higher sugars: 1.5%
  • Ash: 0.2%
  • Other/undetermined: 3.2%

A tablespoon or two of honey to your pre-workout meal might be an epic way to obtain the aforementioned benefits as well as have a good source of energy to crush it in the gym.

The Health Rundown

The benefits of honey are well worth the low cost that local growers usually charge. The benefits, albeit low on the science scale and high on the folklore scale, are well worth it!

Look, I don’t sell local honey. I sell nutritional supplements and clothing. I have no skin in the game. I am just so impressed by this stuff and my allergy suppression that I am going to tell you to try it if you have allergies or just simply want another healthy item in your diet.

So my ultimate health stack consists of three items. Two I sell, one I don’t:
