A Bodybuilder Reviews iSatori Bio Gro & Bioactive Peptides Research
If you’re reading this, then I have a hunch you and I are a lot alike. My bet is we’re both meatheads. Gym rats. The quintessential bodybuilder. And damn proud of it.
So, why does that matter?
Because in order to understand what I’m about to talk about, you have to have an interest in building up muscle. Increasing your strength. And above all, have a strong desire, like me, to find the “next best thing” to help improve our ability accomplish these bodybuilding necessities.
Well, I may be a little biased because, out of full disclosure, I actually invented these tiny little growth factor fractions, called “bio-active peptides”, but what I am about to share with you about Bio-Gro is truly ‘the next best thing,’ and I have the science to prove it.
But, what are they? How do they work? And most important, what does the science say about these powerful bio-active peptides?
What are Bioactive Peptides?
First, let’s talk about what these bio-active peptides are made from. Without getting too technical, they are tiny protein fragments, isolated through a complex and patented manufacturing process, whereby growth factors are extracted from bovine colostrum (colostrum is not milk, by the way, like most people assume) and concentrated into specific ratios (percentage of final product makeup), and the final product are raw, unadulterated “bio-active peptides.”
Bio-active meaning to ‘actively’ affect living tissue. In our case, it means muscle cell. And peptides meaning string of proteins. That’s how we created the name “bio-active peptides,” and now it’s become a common product category name in most progressive sports supplement resellers. We then applied for a patent on this dietary supplement creation and commercialized the first bio-active peptides supplement, under the name Bio-Gro, from the company I founded, iSatori. (Maybe you’ve heard of it, or tried it!)
Tiger Fitness CMO Marc Lobliner discusses why he thinks iSatori Bio Gro might just be the next big thing.
How Bioactive Peptides Work
Next up, let’s discuss how they work. This gets a little more complicated, but I’ll keep it simple. I’m not a PhD, even though I spend a lot of time in the lab, reading scientific literature, and I have a perverse relationship with scouring clinical study abstracts. Even so, I still confuse myself sometimes by the complex terminology,
Bio-active peptides, in the simplest terms, work by deploying a strong ‘cell signaling’ effect. They essentially tell the muscle cell to ‘call for’ more amino and increase the rate (speed) of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is the rate at which a muscle cells repairs and rebuilds itself, as long as there is adequate amino acids (from protein) available and proper stress and trauma has been applied to the muscle cell from intense physical and or weight-training. Essentially, the faster the rate of protein synthesis, the faster the muscle rebuilds itself bigger or stronger, depending on your training agenda.
Think about bio-active peptides this way: They are like ‘fertilizer for your muscles.’ I love the accuracy of that metaphor. It was a term was coined by my good friend, and one of the smartest persons I know in the world of sports performance supplementation (he’s the head of Baylor University’s Human Performance Center).
Like grass in our yard, provided there’s water and sunshine, with fertilizer the grass will grow faster than without it, right. Well, our muscles’ reaction to bio-active peptides are very much the same. With bio-active peptides, and provided there are adequate aminos available, and intense training has occurred, the muscle cell will grow faster with bio-active peptides than without.
The Scientific Review of Bioactive Peptides
Now, let’s get the muscle of our piece—the scientific review. This is where, in my opinion, the rubber meets the road. It’s where a performance supplements either proves up, or runs away with its tail between its legs.
As you know, sadly, few… and I mean very few… supplement companies in our industry ever fund an actual study on their final product formulas. There’s only a handful I can think of. It’s these companies who tend to lead the innovation in our industry, and everyone else simply “borrows” their science to support their product claims.
It’s called pseudoscience, and it’s a shame.

Rather than invest in legitimate scientific studies that prove your product does what you say it will and that it’s safe, they’d rather put more money into marketing or in their pocket. Though, I am excited to say, my company iSatori, has always funded research on our own products.
I guess that’s why we create new categories and everyone else follows us. Maybe I’m just stupid. My belief is, innovation is the only way to truly advance and it’s the greatest differentiator of our brand. I’m proud of what we do, and stand for. And, I’m fairly certain, it helps build our customer’s confidence in us – something that means more to me than anything else.
Since we first introduced bio-active peptides in May 2013, they’ve undergone their fair share of scrutiny and skepticism. And for good reason. Most serious weight-trainers, like you and me, have gotten duped over the years with hyped up supplements that didn’t deliver. But with any new innovation, there comes the skepticism, then ridicule, and finally belief – that it works or doesn’t. The final stage is where the science comes in.
Since our release, we’ve undergone three clinical studies on bio-active peptides (and a fourth in underway at an NCAA school with athletes) and we’ve produced six scientific abstracts. These studies have been either presented or published at scientific conferences or journals. I’ll make all six available for review, but for now, let me summarize their results for you:
Study #1 – The Minimum Amount of Bio-Gro Required to Elicit a Desired Response
Our first study was performed at the prestigious University of Central Florida under the expert guidance of Jeffrey Stout, Ph.D., and his experienced team of exercise physiologists. The intent of the study was to verify the minimum amount of Bio-Gro needed to elicit a positive effect on recovery, strength, power, and muscle growth during short-term resistance training in men over a period of 28 days. It was designed as the “gold standard” of research, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized protocol.
The results were very promising. They showed positive trends on virtually every area that was investigated, though minimal. What opened our eyes, though, was that beyond the recovery, strength, and increased training volume seen with the Bio-Gro bio-active peptides group, a positive change in muscular pennation angle was observed (this is an early indication of muscular hypertrophy).
This study was the true indicator that Bio-Gro—even at minimal levels—would push human physiology to morph and adapt faster than a placebo.

Study #2 – 8 Week Impact of Bio-Gro on Experienced Lifters
To further our clinical investigation on Bio-Gro bio-active peptides, we commissioned a second study with the Superior Performance Research Group in Miami, Florida, headed up by Patrick Jacobs, Ph.D.. Dr. Jacobs was the principal investigator and is an avid weight-lifter himself so he was excited to study our new creation, because he hadn’t seen much evidence of anything new, beyond creatine. In this study we looked for dose-dependent levels of Bio-Gro (the same dosing as on the Bio-Gro bottle) on experienced weight-training men, and over a longer period of time. This time, our study went for eight weeks.
The results of this eight-week double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study firmly solidified Bio-Gro bio-active peptides as a truly efficacious muscular performance supplement. In fact, so positive, this study to date has produced four clinical abstracts that have been accepted for publication within the ISSN and the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 2015.
Here’s a brief overview of the muscular performance results from this eight-week study, which demonstrated exceptional results for Bio-Gro bio-active peptides versus placebo:
- 6.3 lbs of total body mass: +2.25 times greater than placebo
- 0.7 inch increase in muscle size (arm circumference): +2.3 times greater than placebo
- Significant increase in 1RM (one rep max) Leg Press strength: +2.165 times greater than placebo
- Significant increase in 1RM Bench Press strength: +4.125 times greater than placebo

Study #3 – Analyzing Bio-Gro’s Impact on Continuous Usage
Study number three on bio-active peptides was identical in protocol to study number 2, only the emphasis was on measuring safety in health and organ functions, with continued use. Oftentimes, safety is overlooked when it comes to dietary supplement formulation studies, but it is – in my opinion – equally as valid. I want to ensure that our customers are taking a product that works, and that is safe to use on a daily basis.
Here’s a brief overview of the results from this eight-week “safety” study:
Comprehensive hemodynamic, blood, and safety profile was taken on all participants and the Bio-Gro bio-active peptides users demonstrated no negative mean effects in blood serum markers of health and organ function’ on blood markers, outside of healthy, normal ranges after eight weeks of daily use; and
Did not promote adipose (e.g., fat) gain

Final Thoughts of Bio-Bro, Research and the Muscle Building Process
Even so, we continue to forge ahead with our scientific efforts on bio-active peptides. The way I see it, the more we study them, the more we learn about their benefits. So I’m glad to announce we have yet another study being conducted, as I write this, at the University of Wisconsin on NCAA athletes. Data will be published once it’s completed and presented. This study will look at other athletic performance measures, not studied in our previous clinical research, and it will be longer term as well.
To conclude, I think it’s safe to say, that even in the wake of general skepticism for something truly new and breakthrough in muscular performance supplementation, my hope is that after reading over thousands of customer reviews from satisfied TigerFitness customers, and reading through our six clinical study abstracts and even knowing that Mr. Marc “The Machine” Lobliner himself has touted Bio-Gro bio-active peptides as the “next biggest thing since creatine,” that you might want to give it a try.
I’m pretty certain you won’t be disappointed, as long as you’re training intensely and eating plenty of protein. And you can bet, when I’m not in the gym, I’ll be in the lab developing an improvement on bio-active peptides and working hard to help you find the ‘next big breakthrough,’ to build your better body through legitimate science.
